From Search Visitor to Booked Patient
How an Edinburgh Physiotherapy Clinic Increased New Patient Bookings by 20%
Lakeside Physiotherapy & Wellness
20%
More New Patient Bookings
Lakeside Physiotherapy had a strong local reputation and a steady stream of patients.
But there was a gap between people finding the clinic online and actually booking an appointment.
The opportunity wasn't simply to attract more visitors. It was to help more of the existing visitors become patients.

The Challenge
Lakeside wasn't struggling because nobody knew the clinic existed. The problem was what happened after someone found it.
The clinic's Google listing was generating visibility. The website was generating visits. But too many potential patients were dropping off before completing the booking process.
A typical new patient journey looked like:
At several points, the journey created unnecessary friction.
Our initial audit uncovered three major issues.
01.
Booking took too many steps
A new patient had to move through multiple pages before reaching the actual booking experience. For someone searching from a phone, every additional step created another opportunity to leave.
02.
The review gap weakened trust
Lakeside had 96 Google reviews. Nearby competing clinics averaged approximately 151 reviews. The clinic had good feedback, but that reputation wasn't being communicated as strongly as it could have been.
03.
Local search traffic wasn't converting efficiently
The clinic was receiving visits from high-intent local searches, but the website wasn't giving these visitors a fast enough reason to book.
"The problem wasn't getting people to the clinic website. It was getting them from the website to the appointment calendar."
For searches such as:
the clinic was receiving visits from people already showing intent. The website wasn't giving them a fast enough reason to book.
Strategy
We focused on one simple question: What does a new patient need to see before they're comfortable booking?
Four things every patient needs
Trust
Can I trust this clinic?
Relevance
Can they help with my specific problem?
Convenience
Can I book easily?
Confidence
What happens after I book?
"Every unanswered question creates a reason to postpone booking."
Execution
01. Reducing Booking Friction
The original booking journey required approximately:
That was too much. We redesigned the primary patient journey so booking was accessible much earlier.
New journey
The primary booking CTA was also made more visible throughout the site.
02. Making the Website Patient-Friendly
Healthcare websites have a unique problem. Patients don't necessarily know the technical terminology. Someone might search for:
"pain in my shoulder"
rather than "rotator cuff rehabilitation"
So service pages were reorganized around patient needs. Instead of leading with technical descriptions, pages answered practical questions:
- What problem are you experiencing?
- How can we help?
- What treatment might be appropriate?
- Who will treat you?
- What should you expect?
- How do you book?
03. Building Trust Before the Booking Button
Patients are making a personal decision. They aren't buying a pair of shoes — they're choosing someone to help with their health. That means trust signals matter.
We brought key credibility elements closer to the booking decision:
The goal was to answer uncertainty before it became abandonment.
04. Closing the Review Gap
Lakeside started with 96 Google reviews. Nearby competitors averaged 151. That created a visible trust gap.
Instead of simply asking the clinic to "get more reviews," we created a structured review-request process. Patients were prompted after completed appointments with a simple path to leave genuine feedback.

Ending reviews
The objective wasn't to chase reviews for the sake of a number. It was to make sure satisfied patients had an easy way to share their experience.
05. Google Business Profile Optimization
The clinic's Google presence was treated as an extension of the website. We reviewed:
We also aligned the profile with the services the clinic most wanted to grow. This helped create a more consistent experience from Google Search to Google Business Profile to Clinic Website to Booking.
Before → After
The new experience was built around one idea: remove the friction between "I need help" and "I've booked an appointment."
- Google Search
- Google Business Profile
- Homepage
- Find service
- Read information
- Find booking
- Multiple clicks
- Potential patient leaves
- Google Search
- Relevant service page
- Trust signals
- Treatment information
- Book Appointment
- Booking system
- New Patient
Mobile Experience
Mobile was one of the biggest opportunities. A significant portion of local clinic searches were coming from smartphones.
That meant the website needed to work for someone who might be searching while at work, on the way home, in pain, looking for a clinic nearby, or comparing multiple providers.
The redesigned mobile experience prioritized:
The booking CTA remained accessible without forcing the user to navigate back through the website.
The 8-Week Result
After the changes were implemented and the new experience had enough time to stabilize, the clinic showed measurable improvement.
| Metric | Before | After | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Patient Bookings | 150 / month | 180 / month | +20% |
| Online Booking Completions | 112 / month | 150 / month | +34% |
| Local Organic Traffic | 2,420 visits / month | 3,073 visits / month | +27% |
| Google Reviews | 96 | 135 | +39 reviews |
What changed financially?
$48.6K
Potential annualized value
30 additional monthly bookings
× 75% appointment attendance
= 22.5 additional attended appointments
× $180 average initial patient value
≈ $4,050 additional monthly patient revenue
For a clinic, a new patient isn't simply a website conversion. It's the beginning of a patient relationship.
Actual revenue will vary based on treatment type, patient lifetime value, insurance mix, repeat visits, and appointment attendance.
The bigger opportunity is that the clinic created a more efficient path from existing search demand to booked appointments.
The Biggest Improvement Wasn't the Design
The website didn't need to become more complicated. It needed to become easier for a new patient.
"Where do I go?"
"This is what I need. These are the people who can help. I can book right here."
That difference is what conversion optimization is really about.
"We knew our website needed work, but the biggest surprise was how many people were already finding us and then dropping out before booking. Simplifying that journey made a noticeable difference."

One Extra Click Can Mean One Lost Patient
For a clinic, a visitor isn't just a number in Google Analytics. There's a real person behind that session.
Someone searching "physiotherapy near me" is already showing intent. The clinic's job is to remove the friction between:
"I need help."
"I've booked an appointment."
We look at the complete patient acquisition journey
If there's friction anywhere in that journey, the clinic can lose the patient to the next search result.
